Seasonal Fruit Calendar

Seasonal Fruit Calendar

It took me several years of nearly missing strawberry season to realize I needed to pay a little more attention to when things grow in my region. After too many crunchy, eye-squinchingly-sour grocery store strawberries I started writing down some of my favorite fruit seasons on the calendar. Apple season is the one most familiar to many people, but can you quickly spout off when you can buy a fresh plum or blueberry nearby? Or, in this region, can you tell me the one fruit that you might be able to forage in December? It’s a persimmon, which I will readily admit I didn’t know until rounding up this information.

The Purdue University Extension is the gold standard for tracking and listing our growing seasons, and I’ve spent a lot of time reading their literature over the years. It seems every fair or farmer’s market has some of their brochures fluttering around. You can read a little more in depth here:

In the meantime, I spent a fun afternoon whipping up a mouthwatering infographic in the dead of winter. I couldn’t find a cool looking collection of this information that was listed by month instead of alphabetically and not mixed in with things like turnips and collard greens (sorry, but, blech). Feel free to save it and maybe even post it to your fridge so you can be sure to get the tastiest fruit in 2022!
